Life imitates opera with scissor-sharp wit!
Long-time friends Mendy and Stephen are ferociously dedicated and competitive opera buffs. With hilarious banter, Mendy cajoles Stephen to lend him a rare La Traviata recording while trying to distract him from a crumbling relationship with his partner, Mike. When Stephen confronts Mike and his young friend Paul, larger-than-life passions explode on the scale of grand opera.
A very successful Off-Broadway production written by multi award-winning master playwright Terrence McNally, the play is initially reminiscent of an Oscar Wilde drawing room comedy with witty dialogue crackling crisply. This incisive, brilliantly executed play veers from high comedy to stark tragedy, using an obsession with grand opera as a metaphor to bring the play to its explosive conclusion.
“A highly entertaining, amusing, touching, compelling play.” — New York Observer
“Bitchy and brilliant… Jealousy was never so juicy.” – Stage and Cinema

PYGMALION
– the play
Henry Higgins, a phonetician, accepts a bet that simply by changing the speech of a Cockney flower seller he will be
able, in six months, to pass her off as a duchess.
After Eliza completes a gruelling training, she then successfully ‘passes’ in high society – having in the process become a lovely young woman of sensitivity and taste – Higgins dismisses her abruptly as a successfully completed experiment.
